October 19, 2003: As one of 2 new trucks recently delivered by Pierce Mfg., this one takes the cake. Many features include a cascade air system, a command desk, compartments that  go clear through to the other side of the truck, and many storage bins on top of the truck. The new apparatus page (under Extra Alarms) has been updated to reflect recent deliveries.
October 18,2002- Around 7:30am this morning Engine 188 was dispatched to a reported car fire in the 4000 block of Veterans at Christmas Limited. Other units, including 188, determined that the call was a structure fire and not a car fire. A full assignment was dispatched at that time. The first companies quickly assessed the situation and called for a second alarm. Five minutes later a third and then a fourth alarm were called as the fire quickly engulfed the facility.  The sequential alarms brought virtually all of the JPFD to the scene along with trucks from Harahan, Kenner, Nine-Mile Point, and Third District.  During the fire, New Orleans and several west bank departments covered the JPFD stations. Ladders 117,137,177, and 187 used their ladders, and various pumps utilized their deck guns during the blaze. The ATF, JPFD Arson, and the State Fire marshal's Office are involved in the investigation to determine what started the fire.

September 16,2002: It was a busy night for B platoon as they responded to over 14 calls(from 8:45pm-2am) before the storm prevented any agency in Jefferson Parish from responding to calls.  After the top predicted winds raced through the city, units from the JPFD  only responded to structure fire calls in order to protect the members of the department.  During the evening hours, calls ranged from downed power lines to automatic alarms. In one instance, the third floor of an apartment building collapsed leaving residents in the wake of pouring rain and downed wires.

September 15,2002: Engine 128 has a new Pierce Pump. The truck is identical to the four other pieces of apparatus that were placed into service earlier this year.  This means that all of the JPFD's front pumpers are no older than 1998.  Plans have already been submitted for a new Pierce Lance rescue truck.

April 2, 2003: Station 13 is up for bid this week (4/1) in order to get the station back up and running. The bids for station 15 will go out several months from now. A new rescue squad has been ordered and a new 100ft tower ladder may be ordered. The squad is expected to arrive 9 months from now. The new Bullard Thermal Imaging Cameras (one seen to the right) arrived last week (3/25). November 7,2002-As stated on this site on 4/19/02, the department considered purchasing defibrillators. These 25 AED's have just been placed into service on every truck in the JPFD. They were purchased with funds (over $54,000) donated by Baptist Community Ministries. This is the start of many new things that the department will obtain over the next year. In addition to AED's, the department is considering purchasing thermal imaging cameras, and a new rescue truck. The new Pierce Lance non walk in rescue squad will have a command zone cab with seating for 5.  A cascade air system will not be on the truck. The shelves will roll out and a select few will roll out and down. A ladder on the back of the apparatus will allow firemen to access more storage bins on top of the truck. It will have 3 doors on the cab, and the inside of the cab will have a table and cabinets.  It will have a raised roof. All of this equipment comes at a time when several stations are in transtion periods as well.

Department Now using Trunked System
November 7,2002- After switching to new Motorola radios and replacing Plexitron modules with Klaxon alert systems, the department has finally made the transition from UHF analog airwaves to a Motorola Hybrid Trunked System. The move, which was expected to occur at the end of the summer, was delayed because of time constraints concerned with reprogramming the fairly new radios. The new switch will allow the department to operate one dispatch channel, 2 firegrounds(instead of one), and it will incorporate previous trunked channels such as arson into one simple system.
Rescue/Thermal Imaging Cameras (Update)
December 2003: Bidding for the new rescue truck opened on December 11.  It has all of the features that are listed in the AED article and then some. Three thermal imaging cameras have arrived. They have been placed on Engines 118,158, and 168. The Stokes Basket on Ladder 117 has been replaced with a more compact rescue tool called the Sked Rescue Basket. This fold up basket takes up less space than the Stokes Basket does, but it still operates like a Stokes Basket.
