January 7, 2006: As a new year begins the department has many issues to contend with including a burgeoning population. A city with a night time population of around 180,000 people, the east bank of Jefferson Parish swells well past capacity during the day in this post Katrina world filled with office workers, contractors, displaced residents, etc. The JPFD must contend with thicker traffic jams and an increased call volume as a direct result of these changes. Some of these fires have been documented in the Times Picayune. Please remain fire safe throughout these times. This includes checking/changing smoke detector batteries, never leaving lit candles unattended, and keeping flammables in well ventilated areas.

During the freeze period, the JPFD rolls a parish water tanker on all reported structure fire calls. This 1500 gallon truck will aid other pumps in case the hydrants freeze. The idea to use an extra source of water allows fire crews to search for hydrants that aren't frozen and helps firefighters to not waste time fighting a fire during the colder temperatures.
April 4,2001: The Eagle Scout Project at Station 11 has been completed. Now all 3 shifts at station 11 can rest between calls in the shade. On April 19, plants were added by the crew members.
